SPA 245 - Hispanic Heritage in the Southwest: Culture and Language Description: A panorama of Hispanic heritage in the Southwestern U.S. Encompasses an analysis of society, culture, language, tradition, and their contributions to the development of the rich diversity of the Southwestern region.

- Chicano culture
Learning Outcomes:
- Trace the origins and development of Hispanic stereotypes and their relationships to the "Leyenda Negra". (1,2)
- Debate the concept of "borderlands" both during the Spanish exploration/conquest period, and in the present Southwest. (3)
- Articulate consequences of the Hispanic missionary enterprise during the colonial era. (4,5)
- Identify basic elements of borderlands Spanish language in diverse contexts. (3)
- Analyze the effect of codeswitching and language shift on borderlands Spanish language constructions. (3)
- Elucidate the interconnectedness between borderlands Spanish language and Hispanic culture. (3)
