ANT 232 - Indians of the Southwest Description: Survey of major Indian groups of the southwestern United States: Pueblo, Navajo, Apache, Papago, Pima, River Yuman and Mountain Yuman (Yavapai, Hualapai, Havasupai). Emphasis on historical factors that have led to culture change. Development of these groups from Spanish contact to present.

- Cultural practices of Southwestern tribes
- Intertribal relationships
- Impact of Spanish colonialism
- Practices of resistance and resilience
- Modern issues facing Native Americans of the Southwest
- Ethnocentrism and cultural perspective
Learning Outcomes:
- Explain how Indigenous cultures of the Southwest have historically adapted to and shaped their environments. (1,2)
- Examine the history of human habitation in the Southwest and the cultural development of the major tribes that settled there. (2-4)
- Describe the historical and contemporary relationships between different tribes of the Southwest and the networks of trade, cultural exchange, and conflict that have shaped intertribal dynamics. (5)
- Assess the impact of Spanish colonialism on Southwestern Native American cultures and the ways in which tribes have resisted and maintained resistance in the face of cultural disruption and displacement. (6,7)
- Examine modern issues facing Native American communities in the Southwest. (8)
- Reflect on their own cultural biases and how to overcome ethnocentrism when studying and engaging with cultures different from their own. (9)
