ELT 221 - Communication Systems and Circuits Description: Theory and principles of modern electronic communication systems. Topics include: electromagnetism, functional blocks of communications systems, amplitude modulation (AM) transmission and reception, superheterodyne receivers, systems for frequency synthesis, frequency modulation (FM) transmission and reception, transmission lines, antennas and wave propogation, and fiber optics. Emphasis on analysis and troubleshooting of electronic communication systems and circuits to the component level.
Prerequisites: ELT 126 and ELT 162
Credits: 3 Lecture: 2 Lab: 2
Course Content:
- Electromagnetism
- Communication systems and signal analysis techniques
- Amplitude modulation (AM) transmitters and receivers
- Superheterodyne receivers
- Frequency synthesis
- Frequency modulation (FM) transmitters and receivers
- Transmission lines, antennas, wave propagation, and fiber optics
- Troubleshooting methodology for communication systems
Learning Outcomes:
- Relate the properties of electromagnetic waves to radio component design including antennas. (1, 7)
- Draw a block diagram for a standard communication system, and describe each block and the signals between blocks. (2, 8)
- Analyze communications signals including time, frequency and spectrum analysis. (2)
- Build, analyze, and troubleshoot AM circuits and systems. (3, 4, 8)
- Build, analyze, and troubleshoot a complete superheterodyne receiver. (4, 8)
- Compare and contrast methods for frequency synthesis including phase locked loops, direct digital synthesis, and combination systems. (5)
- Build, analyze, and troubleshoot FM circuits and systems. (5, 6, 8)
- Troubleshoot transmission lines, antenna systems, and fiber optics circuits. (7, 8)
- Formulate and execute a troubleshooting plan for a combination AM/FM receiver. (8)
