LPN 190 - Practical Nursing Transition


Description: Overview of the role of the practical nurse in the care of clients. Includes nursing standards and scope of practice of the practical nurse. Focus on the role of the practical nurse in providing care through interventions consistent with established nursing care plans.

Prerequisites: NSG 151 , NSG 152 , NSG 153 , NSG 154 , NSG 155 , BIO 205

Course Content:
  1. Practical Nurse scope of practice
  2. Collaboration within the healthcare team
  3. Legal and ethical considerations in client care
  4. Cultural and psychosocial considerations in client care
  5. Licensure process and preparation

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Describe the role of the practical nurse in supporting the client and their family as a full partner in prevention of illness and the promotion, restoration, and maintenance of health across the lifespan (Client Centered Care). (1-5)
  2. Identify the role of the practical nurse in the management of a group of clients under the guidance of the registered nurse and in collaboration with the healthcare team (Teamwork and Collaboration). (1-5)
  3. Incorporate the use of nursing research and evidence-based practice into practical nursing care (Evidenced Based Practice). (1-5)
  4. Identify how to evaluate client care within the practical nurse scope of practice based on established outcome criteria (Quality Improvement). (1-5)
  5. Apply regulatory, legal, and ethical principles within the practical nurse scope of practice to minimize risk of harm to clients (Safety). (1-5)
  6. Describe the role of the practical nurse in collecting and recording data to monitor the outcomes of care processes based upon nursing interventions directed toward the client experiencing alterations in health (Informatics). (1-5)
