ICE 255 - Mammography Clinical Education


Description: Supervised clinical assignments follow a structured approach involving observation, assistance, and the achievement of specific mammography competency benchmarks over the course of a semester. These experiences are designed to help students develop essential skills in patient care and mammographic positioning through a competency-based approach.

Course Content:

  1. Professional practice standards and ethics
  2. Planning and time management
  3. Image acquisition techniques
  4. Patient positioning techniques
  5. Communication, critical thinking, and problem solving
  6. Patient care

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Demonstrate proper workplace conduct and uphold professional ethics in accordance to the healthcare agency and mammography department's policies. (1)
  2. Act upon written and verbal directives for image acquisition, including electronic medical record functions in a timely manner, with assistance as needed. (2)
  3. Utilize specialized equipment, software and tools, with assistance as needed. (3)
  4. Create diagnostic mammographic images independently. (4)
  5. Effectively gather relevant patient history, as outlined in the department questionnaire, to apply appropriate or adjusted positioning techniques, with assistance as needed. (5)
  6. Follow patient care protocols before, during and after the examination, with assistance as needed. (6)

 
Required Assessment:

  1. Documentation of student clinical hours meeting or exceeding the program's minimum semester requirements.
  2. Daily log of exams: performed.
  3. Maintenance of repetition log.
  4. Evaluations by the supervising technologist.
    1. Midterm Evaluation
    2. Final Affective Evaluation
  5. Completion of 25 initial supervised hands-on mammographic examinations as required by the Mammography Quality Standards Act and Program (MQSA).
  6. Completion of 75 additional hands-on mammographic examinations as outlined by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
