ENG 270 - Introduction to Fiction Writing Description: Introduction to techniques for reading and writing long form and short form fiction.
Prerequisites: Reading Proficiency. ENG 101 (may be taken concurrently)
General Education Competency: Written Communication

Course Content:
- Elements of fiction writing (e.g., plot, viewpoint, characterization)
- Genre in fiction
- Close reading of literary and student texts
- Historical and cultural influences on fictional texts
- Methods of crafting, critiquing and revising short stories
Learning Outcomes:
- Identify elements of fiction in representative works (e.g. plot, viewpoint, characterization). (1)
- Apply elements of fiction to one's own writing. (2)
- Examine multiple genres in fiction (2).
- Evaluate literary and student texts. (3)
- Examine historical and cultural influences on works of fiction. (4)
- Apply the writing process to create works of fiction. (5)
Required Assessment:
- Minimum of 2500 words monitored writing
