ENG 271 - Introduction to Poetry


Description: Introduction to reading and writing poetry across multiple cultures and time periods.

Prerequisites: Reading Proficiency. ENG 101   (may be taken concurrently).

Course Content:
  1. Elements of poetry writing (e.g., imagery, stanza, internal rhyme, alliteration, consonance)
  2. Close reading of literary and student texts
  3. Historical and cultural contexts for poetry texts
  4. Methods of crafting, critiquing, and revising poetry

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Identify elements of poetry (e.g., imagery, stanza, internal rhyme, alliteration, consonance). (1)
  2. Evaluate representative poetic texts. (2). 
  3. Evaluate student texts. (2)
  4. Examine historical and cultural influences on poetic texts. (3)
  5. Apply the writing process to produce poetic texts. (4). 

Required Assessment:
  1. 2500 words of monitored writing.
