ENG 271 - Introduction to Poetry Description: Introduction to reading and writing poetry across multiple cultures and time periods.
Prerequisites: Reading Proficiency. ENG 101 (may be taken concurrently).
General Education Competency: Written Communication

Course Content:
- Elements of poetry writing (e.g., imagery, stanza, internal rhyme, alliteration, consonance)
- Close reading of literary and student texts
- Historical and cultural contexts for poetry texts
- Methods of crafting, critiquing, and revising poetry
Learning Outcomes:
- Identify elements of poetry (e.g., imagery, stanza, internal rhyme, alliteration, consonance). (1)
- Evaluate representative poetic texts. (2).
- Evaluate student texts. (2)
- Examine historical and cultural influences on poetic texts. (3)
- Apply the writing process to produce poetic texts. (4).
Required Assessment:
- 2500 words of monitored writing.
