EDU 243 - Reading Instruction & Intervention Description: Identification of dyslexia symptoms through screening and evaluation tools as determined by the Arizona Department of Education. Ongoing diagnostic and classroom-based instructional assessments that screen for indicators of dyslexia, including phonological awareness, rapid naming skills, letter/sound correspondence, nonsense word fluency, and symbol recognition. Effective interventions and teaching strategies that address the needs of students with dyslexia. Utilization of the International Dyslexia Association Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading. Arizona Department of Education Certificate requirement for K-3 teachers and K-5 teachers of reading. Preparation for Foundations of Reading exam.

Learning Outcomes:
- Identify Literacy assessments that support the identification of symptoms related to reading deficiencies, such as Dyslexia. (2)
- Compare ongoing diagnostic tools that help identify symptoms related to reading deficiencies, such as Dyslexia, including phonological awareness, rapid naming skills, letter/sound correspondence, nonsense word fluency, and symbol recognition. (2)
- Design lessons using research-based interventions that address the needs of students who may have dyslexia or other reading deficiencies that incorporate phonological and phonemic awareness, rapid naming skills, correspondence between sounds & letters, nonsense word fluency, and sound/symbol recognition instruction as needed. (3)
- Describe research-based intervention strategies for students diagnosed with dyslexia and other reading deficiencies. (4)
