EGR 210 - Introduction to Electrical Engineering


Description: Introduces electrical engineering fundamentals including DC and AC circuit analysis, operational amplifiers, transformers, and AC power. Also introduces electrical lab equipment, electrical circuit simulation, construction and testing.

Prerequisites: Reading Proficiency. MAT 221   (may be taken concurrently)

Course Content:
  1. DC and AC circuit analysis
  2. Passive devices including resistors, capacitors and inductors
  3. Operational amplifiers
  4. Transformers and AC power
  5. Electrical lab equipment
  6. Electrical circuit simulation, construction and testing

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Analyze DC series, parallel and series-parallel circuits using Ohm's Law, Watt's Law, and Kirchoff's Current and Voltage Laws. (1,2)
  2. Solve DC circuits using a variety of analysis techniques including the superposition theorem, Thevenin's theorem, Norton's theorem, nodal analysis and mesh analysis. (1,2)
  3. Perform initial and steady-state DC analysis of RC, RL, and RLC circuits. (1,2)
  4. Analyze series, parallel, and series-parallel RLC circuits. (1,2)
  5. Solve AC circuits using a variety of analysis techniques including the superposition theorem, Thevenin's theorem, Norton's theorem, nodal analysis and mesh analysis. (1,2)
  6. Outline the circuit requirements for operational amplifiers. (3)
  7. Identify common operational amplifier configurations. (3)
  8. Describe transformer operation and applications. (4)
  9. Analyze polyphase AC systems. (4)
  10. Safely measure voltage, current, resistance, capacitance, inductance, and frequency using standard electrical lab equipment. (5,6)
  11. Construct and test DC and AC circuits. (6)
  12. Use engineering software to simulate DC and AC circuits. (6)
