EGR 210 - Introduction to Electrical Engineering Description: Introduces electrical engineering fundamentals including DC and AC circuit analysis, operational amplifiers, transformers, and AC power. Also introduces electrical lab equipment, electrical circuit simulation, construction and testing.
Prerequisites: Reading Proficiency. MAT 221 (may be taken concurrently)
Credits: 4 Lecture: 3 Lab: 2
Course Content:
- DC and AC circuit analysis
- Passive devices including resistors, capacitors and inductors
- Operational amplifiers
- Transformers and AC power
- Electrical lab equipment
- Electrical circuit simulation, construction and testing
Learning Outcomes:
- Analyze DC series, parallel and series-parallel circuits using Ohm's Law, Watt's Law, and Kirchoff's Current and Voltage Laws. (1,2)
- Solve DC circuits using a variety of analysis techniques including the superposition theorem, Thevenin's theorem, Norton's theorem, nodal analysis and mesh analysis. (1,2)
- Perform initial and steady-state DC analysis of RC, RL, and RLC circuits. (1,2)
- Analyze series, parallel, and series-parallel RLC circuits. (1,2)
- Solve AC circuits using a variety of analysis techniques including the superposition theorem, Thevenin's theorem, Norton's theorem, nodal analysis and mesh analysis. (1,2)
- Outline the circuit requirements for operational amplifiers. (3)
- Identify common operational amplifier configurations. (3)
- Describe transformer operation and applications. (4)
- Analyze polyphase AC systems. (4)
- Safely measure voltage, current, resistance, capacitance, inductance, and frequency using standard electrical lab equipment. (5,6)
- Construct and test DC and AC circuits. (6)
- Use engineering software to simulate DC and AC circuits. (6)
