The ALS: Paramedic Refresher course is meticulously aligned with national recertification requirements and state/local guidelines, incorporating up-to-date, evidence-based practices to reinforce proficiency and prepare paramedics for the demands of the prehospital environment.

Prerequisites: Program Director approval.

Credits: 3
Lecture: 2
Lab: 2

Course Content:
  1. Airway Management and Ventilation
  2. Cardiovascular Emergencies, including EKG review and treatment of dysrhythmias
  3. Pharmacology and Medication Administration Updates
  4. Medical and Trauma Emergencies
  5. Special Patient Populations (Pediatric, Geriatric, OB/GYN)
  6. Operations and Scene Management
  7. Patient Safety, Ethics, and Documentation

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Demonstrate paramedic knowledge and skills. (1,4)
  2. Review updated protocols for airway management, cardiac emergencies, and medication use. (2,3)
  3. Review Treatments for emergencies involving adults, children, and special populations. (2-7)
  4. Perform advanced airway and ventilation techniques. (1,5)
  5. Identify and manage life-threatening dysrhythmias using updated EKG and ACLS guidelines. (2)
  6. Deliver effective care in medical and trauma situations, emphasizing medications, cardiac care, and resuscitation. (2-5)
  7. Review and implement current infection control practices for prehospital care. (6,7)

Required Assessment:
  1. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification
    • Assessment Type: Practical and written evaluation
    • Description: Students must demonstrate mastery of ACLS protocols, including cardiac arrest management, arrhythmias, and post-cardiac arrest care. Assessment will include a written test on ACLS algorithms and hands-on practical scenarios such as advanced airway management, defibrillation, and pharmacologic interventions for cardiac emergencies.
    • Pass Requirement: 84% or higher on written exam and successful completion of all practical stations.
  2. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification
    • Assessment Type: Practical and written evaluation
    • Description: This assessment focuses on pediatric resuscitation, respiratory emergencies, and shock management. Students will be evaluated on their ability to perform pediatric assessment, deliver appropriate interventions, and adhere to PALS protocols in emergency situations.
    • Pass Requirement: 84% or higher on written exam and demonstrated competency in all practical skills.
  3. Basic Life Support (BLS) Recertification
    • Assessment Type: Practical skills test
    • Description: Students must pass a skills-based assessment covering basic life-saving techniques, including adult, child, and infant CPR, the use of AEDs, and foreign-body airway obstruction removal techniques.
    • Pass Requirement: 84% or higher on written exam and successful completion of all practical stations.
  4. Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) Certification (Initial or Refresher)
    • Assessment Type: Practical and written evaluation
    • Description: The PHTLS assessment emphasizes trauma patient management, including rapid trauma assessment, hemorrhage control, and shock management. Students will participate in trauma scenarios requiring the application of PHTLS principles in prehospital care settings.
    • Pass Requirement: Achieved a minimum passing score for the course on the written post-test based on NAEMT Guidelines and successful demonstration of practical trauma skills.
  5. Online Quizzes and Knowledge Checks
    • Assessment Type: Online quizzes
    • Description: Students must complete a series of quizzes throughout the online component to assess knowledge retention on topics such as airway management, pharmacology, and cardiovascular emergencies.
    • Pass Requirement: 75% or higher on all quizzes.
  6. Scenario-Based Practical Evaluations
    • Assessment Type: Hands-on practicals
    • Description: Students will be assessed on their ability to manage medical and trauma emergencies through realistic scenarios, applying advanced paramedic skills in dynamic environments.
    • Pass Requirement: Successful completion of all assigned practical scenarios, demonstrating critical thinking and application of clinical protocols.
