ELT 162 - Microprocessors & Microcontrollers
Description: An introduction to microprocessor and microcontroller architecture and programming. Topics include, memory, instruction sets, addressing modes, serial/parallel interfacing, input/output devices, programming techniques and troubleshooting. Real-time applications are studied and verified on actual microprocessors.

Course Content:
- Architecture, memory and addressing
- Interfacing with input/output (I/O) devices
- Reduced instruction set computers (RISC) and assembly language
- Complex instruction set computers (CISC) and high-level language
- Programming
- Debugging and troubleshooting
Learning Outcomes:
- Describe microprocessor and microcontroller architecture including memory organization and addressing. (1)
- Interface a variety of I/O devices with microcontrollers and/or microprocessors. (2)
- Compare RISC and CISC. (3, 4)
- Write programs in assembly language. (3, 5)
- Write programs in a high-level language for a variety of tasks. (4, 5)
- Debug code written in low- and high-level languages. (3-5)
- Verify successful operation of a complete microcontroller circuit. (4-6)
- Troubleshoot microprocessor and/or microcontroller circuits. (6)
- Use datasheets and device manuals to find critical microprocessor and/or microcontroller information. (1-6)
