ELT 162 - Microprocessors & Microcontrollers

 


Description: An introduction to microprocessor and microcontroller architecture and programming. Topics include, memory, instruction sets, addressing modes, serial/parallel interfacing, input/output devices, programming techniques and troubleshooting. Real-time applications are studied and verified on actual microprocessors.

Course Content:
  1. Architecture, memory and addressing
  2. Interfacing with input/output (I/O) devices
  3. Reduced instruction set computers (RISC) and assembly language
  4. Complex instruction set computers (CISC) and high-level language
  5. Programming
  6. Debugging and troubleshooting

 
Learning Outcomes:

  1. Describe microprocessor and microcontroller architecture including memory organization and addressing. (1)
  2. Interface a variety of I/O devices with microcontrollers and/or microprocessors. (2)
  3. Compare RISC and CISC. (3, 4)
  4. Write programs in assembly language. (3, 5)
  5. Write programs in a high-level language for a variety of tasks. (4, 5)
  6. Debug code written in low- and high-level languages. (3-5)
  7. Verify successful operation of a complete microcontroller circuit. (4-6)
  8. Troubleshoot microprocessor and/or microcontroller circuits. (6)
  9. Use datasheets and device manuals to find critical microprocessor and/or microcontroller information. (1-6)
