PSY 245 - Human Growth and Development
Description: Study of physical, intellectual, moral, emotional, personality, and social development of the human being, beginning with conception and continuing through childhood, adolescence, adulthood, old age, and dying. Emphasis on quantitative and qualitative ways people change throughout the life span and factors which contribute to human diversity as well as to individual uniqueness. Research methods appropriate to the study of human development are also considered.

Course Content:
- The scientific study of human growth and development across the life span from both ethological/biological ("nature") and environmental ("nurture") perspectives
- Theories of cognitive development across the life span
- Theories of social-emotional development across the life span
Learning Outcomes:
- Compare observational, correlational, and experimental methods and how they are applied to the understanding of human development. (1)
- Explain different theoretical approaches to human development, such as physical, cognitive, and socioemotional theories. (2)
- Describe the stages of human development and the lifespan perspective from conception through death. (2)
- Use principles of human development to analyze critical contemporary issues and address problems in areas like health, family, and community services. (1,4)
- Compare how different cultural, religious, and individual perspectives affect development. (3)
- Examine how physical, cognitive, and socioemotional factors interact to shape development, relationships, and communication. (4)
Required Assessment:
- Demonstrate thoughtful and precise writing skills by completing at least 1500 words of monitored writing.
