ELT 165 - Programmable Logic Controllers

 


Description: Introduction to programmable logic controller (PLC) architecture and programming. Topics include, memory, instruction sets, addressing modes, serial/parallel interfacing, relay/ladder logic, and troubleshooting. Real-time applications are studied and verified on actual PLCs and using simulation.

Prerequisites: ELT 101  or ELT 111

Course Content:
  1. PLC architecture and memory organization
  2. PLC instruction sets and programming
  3. Relay and ladder logic
  4. Testing and troubleshooting

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Explain the function of each block within PLC architecture. (1)
  2. Describe the memory organization of a PLC. (1)
  3. Describe PLC instruction sets including addressing modes. (2)
  4. Write a program for a PLC. (2-4)
  5. Interpret relay and ladder logic diagrams. (3)
  6. Use software to test a PLC program before hardware implementation. (3, 4)
