GST 195A - Gunsmithing Practicum

 


Description: Laboratory and extended shop experience for students to develop skills in project planning, drawing and craftsmanship.

Prerequisites: GST 101  (may be taken concurrently.)

Course Content:

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Identify and safely use specialized gunsmithing tools and fixtures following established setup and operating procedures. (1,4)
  2. Inspect, calibrate, and maintain special tooling to ensure safe operation, accuracy, and prevention of equipment-related hazards. (6)
  3. Apply quality control and safety inspection standards to verify firearm function, structural integrity, and compliance with applicable industry and legal requirements. (1,3,6)
  4. Conduct post-assembly and post-repair safety checks, including function testing and documentation, to ensure firearms are safe for use and meet professional gunsmithing standards. (1,6)
  5. Select, inspect, and safely operate hand tools, power tools, and materials used in gunsmithing according to manufacturer guidelines and shop safety standards. (1,4)
  6. Manage time effectively to complete gunsmithing tasks while consistently adhering to established shop safety rules, firearms handling protocols, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements. (1,3,2)
  7. Develop detailed gunsmithing project plans that incorporate safety considerations, including hazard identification, risk mitigation strategies, and compliance with applicable firearms safety regulations. (1,3,2)
