DMS 123 - Introduction to Vascular Procedures I

Description: Introduction of vascular sonography, including the normal anatomy and physiology of the arterial and venous systems, hemodynamic principles, doppler waveform interpretation, and pathology recognition. Emphasis is placed on understanding vascular flow dynamics, disease mechanisms, and diagnostic reasoning to support clinical performance and prepare students for advanced vascular coursework.

Credits: 1
Lecture: 1
Lab: 0

Course Content:
  1. Foundations
  2. Hemodynamics and fluid dynamics
  3. Anatomy
  4. Basic doppler and instrumentation
  5. Vascular pathology

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Demonstrate appropriate patient preparation, exam documentation, and professional communication for vascular procedures. (1)
  2. Explain the principles of hemodynamics and how they influence normal and abnormal Doppler waveforms. (2)
  3. Identify major vascular structures and blood flow characteristics in the arterial and venous systems. (3)
  4. Interpret basic Doppler waveforms. (4)
  5. Correlate waveform morphology with hemodynamic status. (4)
  6. Recognize common vascular pathologies, including thrombosis, stenosis, aneurysm, and venous insufficiency. (5)
