FMA 190 - Foundations of Documentary and Docudrama Storytelling Description: Critical, creative, and ethical foundations of nonfiction storytelling. Students examine how documentaries and docudramas interpret truth through image, sound, and structure while shaping understanding and entertaining. Through viewing, discussion, and project development, students cultivate the habits of inquiry, reflection, and problem-solving that define critical thinking in media practice.
Prerequisites: Reading Proficiency

Course Content:
- Foundations of nonfiction storytelling
- Historical overview, documentary modes and ethics
- Story structures
- Source evaluation through credible research
- Storytelling devices of cinematography, editing, and sound design
Learning Outcomes:
- Identify major documentary and docudrama modes, traditions, and purposes. (1, 2)
- Analyze how structure, cinematography, sound, and editing construct meaning and influence audience interpretation. (2, 4)
- Evaluate ethical and cultural implications of representing real people and events. (1, 3, 4)
- Develop an original nonfiction or docudrama treatment that demonstrates factual accuracy, thematic focus, and creative perspective. (1,5)
- Evaluate the filmmaker's role as interpreter and participant. (1, 2, 4)
