CHM 235 - General Organic Chemistry I CHM 2235 Description: Chemistry of organic compounds with emphasis on reaction mechanisms, stereo-chemistry, and structure. Chemical principles are presented at a level appropriate for science majors, and pre-professional students. Concurrent registration in CHM 235L recommended.
Prerequisites: CHM 151

Course Content:
- Bonding and molecular structure
- Functional groups and Infrared Spectroscopy
- Hydrocarbons (alkanes, alkenes, alkynes) structure, properties, reactivity, and nomenclature
- Stereochemistry - chiral molecules
- Organic reactions and mechanisms - substitutions, eliminations, additions, oxidations/reductions, and radical reaction
- Preparation and reactions of alkenes, alkynes, and alkyl halides
- Preparation and reactions of alcohols and ethers
- Nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopy
