BSA 496 - Internship Capstone: Business


Description: Senior-level supervised field experience intended to build upon previous coursework, linking the theoretical with day-to-day practical applications by applying subject knowledge relevant to the workplace. Under the guidance of a faculty member and organization/industry representative, students will establish specific learning objectives and goals. S/U grading only.

Prerequisites: Program Admission. BSA 394.

Course Content:
  1. Organizational overview of assigned placement
  2. Integration of job description and organization's requirements
  3. Elements of documentation of experience
  4. Planning and time management
  5. Professional, legal, and ethical issues
  6. Communication, critical thinking, and problem solving
  7. Specialized equipment, tools, and software required in the placement

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Exhibit appropriate workplace behaviors and professional ethics. (1)
  2. Assess factors of effective organizations, teams, and people at work. (1)
  3. Compare a job description for position in assigned organization. (2)
  4. Prepare written and oral communications using technical terms and discipline specific knowledge. (3)
  5. Critique written instructions and present them effectively. (3)
  6. Prepare documentation required to comply with government, employer or nonprofit agency regulations. (3, 5)
  7. Formulate plans for improvement in process and/or documentation related to the workplace. (3, 4, 6)
  8. Analyze a problem specific to organization and propose a solution. (6)
  9. Evaluate specialized equipment, software, and tools as required for specific tasks. (7)

Required Assessment:
  1. Record of Student Internship workplace hours.
  2. Individual Education Plan (IEP) as approved by supervision faculty.
  3. A daily journal, or work log of tasks, including dates, descriptive comments, problems and solutions.
  4. A reflective paper or project as specified by the supervision faculty.
  5. A minimum of two evaluations by the workplace employer or supervisor.
  6. Student's self-evaluation of experience.
