NSG 420 - Population-Based Nursing in the Community Description: Introduction to the concepts and principles of community and public health nursing. Emphasis is on community health measures that preserve, promote and maintain the health of populations. Includes 1 credit (45 hours) of clinical practice designed to assess and design a comprehensive teaching plan for a specific population within the community.
Prerequisites: Program Admission.
Credits: 4 Lecture: 3 Lab: 3
Course Content:
- Public versus population health: access, trends, barriers
- Factors influencing environmental health: community assessment, evaluation
- Concepts of epidemiology, disease prevention, and infection control
- Nursing roles: case management, disaster management
- Vulnerable populations: migrants, homeless
- Community Health: surveillance, education, roles
Learning Outcomes:
- Evaluate the evolving roles of the nurse in community settings. (1,4)
- Analyze the influence of culture, socioeconomic status, environment, healthcare policy and legislation on the health of the community. (5,6)
- Compare and contrast the appropriate primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention strategies in working with vulnerable or at-risk populations. (3,5)
- Manage basic principles of epidemiology to community health nursing practice. (3)
- Relate the nursing process to the community. (4,6)
- Assess population health needs based on data from a community assessment. (2)
- Utilize research findings and evidence-based practices in planning health education for a select population. (5,6)
- Create a teaching plan to address a learning need for a vulnerable population. (5)
