NSG 440 - Global Health: Ethics and Human Rights


Description: Exploration of the ethics and human rights issues related to disparities in equality of financial, educational, environmental, and political resources across the United States and the globe. The role of the professional nurse beyond your community is discussed.

Course Content:
  1. Ethical principles, theory, and decision making
  2. Values development and clarification
  3. Legal issues: professional relationships, technology, self-determination, academia
  4. Global issues: health policy, economic, social, gender, transcultural, and spiritual
  5. Empowerment: personal, professional, patient 

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Analyze the impact of social, philosophical, and historical elements have influenced the evolution of professional nursing ethics. (1,5)
  2. Differentiate between ethics and law, discuss the relationship of each to the other. (1,3)
  3. Assess issues related to professional relationships and strategies that nurses can use to resolve conflict. (1,2,5)
  4. Evaluate the impact of legal issues of technology on nursing and healthcare. (3)
  5. Examine the role of nurses related to practice issues and patient self-determination. (3)
  6. Analyze scholarship issues encountered by nurses in academia and clinical settings. (3)
  7. Examine the role and ethical responsibility of professional nurses in addressing local, nationwide, and international environmental issues (1,4)
