NSG 450 - Nursing Leadership Description: Builds on prior learning and experience to explore transformational leadership to facilitate healthy work environments and provide optimal patient care. Includes 1 credit (45 hours) of clinical practice to design a quality improvement project within a health care setting.
Prerequisites: Program Admission.
Credits: 4 Lecture: 3 Lab: 3
Course Content:
- Quality improvement project: processes, SWOT analysis, design, implementation, evaluation
- Concepts of leadership vs. management
- Effective leaders: characteristics, attitudes, values
- How to be a change agent, innovator, visionary, and strategic thinker
- Leading people through coaching, mentoring, empowering and engaging
- Interprofessional leadership through governance and organizational structure
Learning Outcomes:
- Analyze leadership as a strategy to improve patient safety and quality outcomes. (1,4-6)
- Differentiate between leadership and management. (2)
- Analyze leadership qualities and strategies needed to lead people, change and organizations. (3-5)
- Assess the role of the nurse leader in creating and sustaining healthy work environments. (5,6)
- Articulate the roles of the nurse leader as an innovator and change agent. (4)
- Develop and implement a quality improvement project in a clinical setting. (1)
