ELT 279 - Tools for Electronic Troubleshooting


Description: Tools for diagnostic and troubleshooting including technical reference research, technical documentation, diagnostic histories, test equipment, and proper maintenance and calbration techiniques of test equipment.  Additional practice using standard and specialty electronic test equipment.

Prerequisites: ELT 221  (may be taken concurrently) or Instructor permission.

Course Content:
  1. Troubleshooting documentation
  2. Common circuit faults
  3. Equipment maintenance and calibration
  4. Basic electronic test equipment including DC power supplies, multimeters, inductance-capacitance-resistance meters (LCR meters), oscilloscopes, and function generators
  5. Specialty electronics test equipment including frequency counters, wattmeters, spectrum analyzers, audio analyzers, power quality analyzers, and station monitors
  6. Digital circuit test equipment including logic analyzers, logic probes, and logic pulsers

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Describe the importance of proper troubleshooting documentation. (1)
  2. Locate relevant technical information for faulty equipment. (1)
  3. Determine the correct equipment necessary to troubleshoot faults by circuit type. (2)
  4. Identify the most common faults by circuit type. (2)
  5. Document the proper maintenance and calibration requirements of electronic test equipment. (3)
  6. Use appropriate basic electronic test equipment to troubleshoot circuit faults. (4)
  7. Use appropriate specialty electronic test equipment to troubleshoot circuit faults. (5)
  8. Use appropriate digital circuit test equipment to troubleshoot circuit faults. (6)
