EDU 239 - Structured English Immersion Provisional Endorsement
Description: Prepares certified teachers and administrators who were trained in states other than Arizona or were certified after August 2006 to meet the academic needs of English Language Learner populations and qualifies them for the Provisional SEI Endorsement as required by the Arizona Department of Education.

Course Content:
- ELL Proficiency Standards correlated to the K-12 AZ Academic Standards adopted by the AZ Board of Education.
- Assessment tools
- SEI law, history, principles, terminology.
- Role of culture in learning and comprehension
- SEI theory, methods, and strategies in the core curriculum.
- Implementation and Integration of SEI.
Learning Outcomes:
- Identify the legal and historical foundations related to policies and laws governing language instruction in Arizona. (3)
- Explain how state laws and policies impact best practices in English language acquisition. (3, 5)
- Discuss current trends and issues related to English language learners. (5, 6)
- Define models of language instruction approved in Arizona classrooms, including Structured English Immersion (SEI) and bilingual models. (6)
- Identify how SEI is implemented in Arizona classrooms, including program eligibility, proficiency assessments, individual language learner plans, and student accommodations. (2)
- Create lesson plans using the English Language Learner proficiency standards while differentiating instruction and connecting to content area outcomes. (1)
- Identify current and historical theories related to language acquisition. (5)
- Define the elements of language, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, lexicon, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics.
- Describe the roles culture, family engagement, and inclusion have on language acquisition. (4)
