AHS 114 - Nursing Assistant Description: Provides the necessary classroom preparation to learn the role of a nursing assistant. Basic nursing assistant skills and emergency procedures; patient or resident needs and rights; written and verbal communication; ethical and legal aspects; safety and infection control.
Prerequisites: Reading Proficiency. MAT 082 or higher (or a satisfactory score on the mathematics skills assessment).
Corequisite: AHS 114L and AHS 114C

- Basic restorative care skills
- Role as a healthcare team member
- Legal aspects of nursing assistant practice
- Body structure and common diseases
Learning Outcomes:
- Describe effective communication with patients or residents, families, and members of the health care team. (1,11)
- Identify the chain of infection and general principles of infection control. (2)
- Define elements of a safe environment for the patient or resident and health care team. (3,5)
- Identify a medical emergency and basic emergency care. (3)
- Explain how to promote patient or resident independence and rights. (4,5,12)
- Identify abuse, mistreatment, and neglect in patient or resident care. (6,12)
- Describe basic nursing assistant and restorative care skills. (7,10)
- Identify how culture affects the care of a patient or resident. (5,8)

Required Assessment:
- Final comprehensive knowledge exam that requires a minimum score of 75% to be eligible to take the AZBN state competency exams.
