NSG 190 - Practical Nursing Transition


Description: Overview of the role of the practical nurse in the care of patients. Includes nursing standards and scope of practice of the practical nurse. Emphasis is on nursing care related to pediatric and care of the well childbearing patient and childbearing family. Focus is on the role of the practical nurse in providing care through interventions consistent with established nursing care plans. [A-F grading only.]

Course Content:
  1. Safe nursing care for pediatric patients: Developmental/ learning needs; Nutritional aspects of care; Health promotion; Pathophysiology of selected alterations in health; Nursing process; Documentation and reporting 
  2. Nursing process for well childbearing patients and their families: Sexuality and reproduction; Normal pregnancy; Intrapartum; Postpartum; Normal newborn; Care of patients with selected perinatal complications 
  3. Collaboration within the health care team: Communication; Conflict/negotiation management; Delegation; Participation in discharge planning 
  4. Scope of practice and legal/ethical considerations in patient care: Arizona Nurse Practice Act; Standards of practice for the practical and professional nurse; Agency guidelines; Licensure process (application and preparation) for National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) Examination 
  5. Nursing care of patients in clinical/lab settings: Pediatric patients with selected alterations in health; Childbearing patients; Childrearing family; 
  6. Nursing interventions for care of pediatric and childbearing patients: Clinical skills/procedures; Medication administration; Medication calculations

  2. Describe developmental and learning needs of pediatric, childbearing patients, and their families. (1,5)
  3. Describe nursing standards that safeguard the patient's health and well-being within the practical nurse's scope of practice. (4)
  4. Describe the role of the practical nurse in the management of a group of patients under the guidance of the registered nurse ​ and collaboration with the healthcare team. (3,4)
