SPA 098 - Spanish in Daily Life I


Description: Basic daily interactions with Spanish speakers in the US with a heightened emphasis on simple conversational language constructions and cultural components. Intended for the most novice of beginning Spanish students who have little or no formal training with Spanish and who want a very simple and basic conversationally-oriented introduction to the language. Includes functional language topics for interactions with Spanish speakers in real-world contexts, and highlights entry-level cultural components of Spanish users living in the United States. Designed to improve cultural and linguistic competence and to build bilingualism and biculturalism through a conversational approach.

  1. Greetings, presentations, and courtesy expressions
  2. Formulaic expressions
  3. Basic biographical information
  4. Spanish pronouns and select prepositions
  5. Basic Spanish pronunciation
  6. Infinitive constructions/verb phrases
  7. Descriptions of future actions
  8. Definite and indefinite articles
  9. Agreement (number and gender)
  10. Expressions with hay
  11. Question/response formation
  12. Lexical components needed for every day practical interactions with Spanish speakers
  13. Components of Spanish speaking culture in the US

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Use formulaic/courtesy expressions as well as greetings and presentations.  (1,2)
  2. Present basic biographical information. (3) 
  3. Narrate utterances in the present using prepositions and pronouns. (4)
  4. Form basic utterances using verb phrases and infinitive expressions.  (5-9).
  5. Articulate verbal utterances with effective Spanish pronunciation.  (5)
