NSG 320 - Nursing Practice in a Multicultural Society


Description: Exploration of the ethics and human rights issues related to disparities in equality of financial, educational, environmental, and political resources across the United States and the globe. The role of the professional nurse beyond your community is discussed.

Course Content:
  1. Cultural competence in healthcare
  2. Cultural considerations at beginning and end of life, mental health and pain management practice
  3. Cultural care framework
  4. Cross cultural communication; working with interpreters
  5. Caring for diverse populations
  6. Health equity in diverse populations: indigenous, sexual and gender diversity, immigrant and refugee health
  7. Healing systems and traditions

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Analyze the terms culture, cultural competence, cultural safety, cultural imposition, diversity, ethnicity, ethnocentrism, health equity, and worldview.  (1,6)
  2. Compare major views related to culture and diversity and their effect on incorporating culture into health care. (5)
  3. Assess how cultural sensitivity, cultural knowledge, and cultural resources work together to cultivate cultural competence in health care.  (1,3)
  4. Analyze the strategies of cultural care preservation, cultural care accommodation and negotiation, and cultural care reframing and how they can be used to bridge the gap across cultures. (3,7)
  5. Demonstrate practical skills for improving verbal interaction with patients at various levels of health literacy and how these affect a patient's communication, comprehension, and basic understanding of health. (2,4)
  6. Analyze culturally safe communication and the decision-making process among patients, families, and health care providers to improve childbirth experiences. (2,4)
  7. Articulate how culture, language, and context effect attitudes and beliefs of healthcare providers and patients related to death and dying. (2)
  8. Evaluate how culture impacts a patient's point of view related to diagnosis and treatment of mental health and mental illness. (2)
