AFR 102 - Heritage and Values


Description: Continuation of AFR 101. Survey course designed to introduce students to the United States Air and Space Forces and provides an overview of the basic characteristics, missions, and organization of the Air and Space Forces. Leadership Laboratory is mandatory for Air Force ROTC cadets and complements this course by providing cadets with followership experiences.

Course Content:
This course provides an introduction to the Air and Space Forces, hopefully encouraging students to pursue an Air Force career or at least seek additional information to be better informed about the role of the USAF. The course allows students to examine general aspects of the Department of the Air Force, leadership fundamentals, service benefits, and opportunities for officers. The course also lays the foundation for becoming an Air or Space professional by outlining our heritage and values. As a foundational course, this course provides a historical perspective such as lessons on war and US military, AF operations, principles of war, and airpower. As a whole, this course provides students with a knowledge level understanding for the employment of air and space power, from an institutional, doctrinal, and historical perspective. The students will be introduced to the military way of life and gain knowledge on what it means to be an Air and Space professional. A succinct perspective of the course objective is to seal the Air Force as a career and lay a strong foundation built on Air Force Core Values.

 
Learning Outcomes:

  1. Know the major historical events, leaders and milestones that contributed to the development of the USAF.
  2. Understand that effective listening positively affects mission accomplishment. 
  3. Exhibit knowledge of the steps to effective communication and demonstrate basic communicative skills.
  4. Know the various services and activities found on a typical Air Force base.
  5. Exhibit knowledge of the basic characteristics of war and how it applies to the military.
  6. Exhibit knowledge of the importance of Core Values to Air Force members.
  7. Know the basic characteristics of Air Force leadership.
  8. Understand the importance of managing diversity and the concepts and consequences of harassment. 
  9. Understand the meaning of Oath of Office and Commissioning.
