LPN 205 - Advanced Development of Practical Nursing


Description: Continuation of theoretical concepts that direct practical nursing skills and the development of nursing practice.  Uses the nursing process as a framework for care and implementation of appropriate nursing interventions in the laboratory setting. Integrates the competencies of nursing practice to include patient centered care for the adult, obstetric, newborn, and pediatric patient, professionalism, communication, teamwork, collaboration, safety, quality, informatics, and evidence-based practice.  Intermediate to advanced practical nursing skills are developed.

Prerequisites: LPN 101 , LPN 105 , LPN 110 , and LPN 115 .

Corequisite: LPN 201 , LPN 210 , and LPN 215 .

Course Content:
  1. Contribute to the assessment of the adult, obstetric, newborn, and pediatric patient
  2. Suctioning
  3. Tracheostomy care
  4. Venipuncture
  5. IV therapy

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Perform intermediate to advanced practical nursing skills on culturally diverse adult, obstetric, newborn, and pediatric patients (Patient Centered Care). (1-5)
  2. Utilize the healthcare team to provide safe and effective physical, mental, and psychosocial care for adult, obstetric, newborn, and pediatric patients, and utilize appropriate delegation while performing practical nursing skills (Teamwork and Collaboration). (1-5)
  3. Apply principles of evidence-based practice when performing and documenting practical nursing care for the adult, obstetric, newborn, and pediatric patient (Evidence-based Practice). (1-5)
  4. Interpret data to monitor the outcomes of care processes based upon nursing interventions directed toward the patient's physical, mental, and psychosocial health care needs throughout the life span (Quality Improvement).  (1-5)
