MSL 101 - Basic Military Science I


Description: A study of the defense establishment and the organization and development of the U.S. Army. A study of the roles that active Army forces, Army Reserve forces, and the Army National Guard play in our nation's defense. A Study of military courtesy, customs, and traditions of the service. A historical perspective of the role of the different branches of the U.S. Army and the role they have played in the freedom of our nation. An introduction to physical readiness training. Course includes lectures and laboratory. Field training exercises normally include M16-A1 rifle firing, rappelling training, and airmobile helicopter operations.

Course Content:
MSL 101 introduces the student to the personal challenges and competencies that are critical for effective leadership. Students will learn how the personal development of life skills such as goal setting, time management, physical fitness, and stress management relate to leadership, officership, and the Army profession.

The focus is on developing basic knowledge and comprehension of Army leadership dimensions while gaining a big picture understanding of the ROTC program, its purpose in the Army, and its advantages for the student.

  1. Understand leadership philosophies and integrate them into your own personal development experiences.
  2. Describe the relationship between leader character and competence.
  3. Identify the sixteen dimensions of the Army Leadership Model.
  4. Explain the Warrior Ethos.
  5. Analyze the seven Army values.
  6. Define and achieve standards for the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT).
  7. Write short-term and long-term goals and a personal plan to prepare for APFT.
  8. Recognize the basic elements of time and stress management. 
  9. Explain the importance of being a model citizen as an Army officer.
  10. React to passing colors, National music, and approaching officers.
  11. Locate a point on a military map using the grid reference system.
