MSL 101L - Basic Military Science I Laboratory


Description: Leadership laboratory with emphasis on military leadership and small unit tactics. Students develop leadership abilities through hands-on practical experiences. Training is introductory in scope and includes operations and tactics and land navigation subjects. Practical training exercises familiarize students with the field environment and field survival skills. The Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) is administered to assess the state of physical development.

Course Content:
MSL 101L introduces the student to the personal challenges and competencies that are critical for effective leadership. Students will learn how the personal development of life skills such as goal setting, time management, physical fitness, and stress management relate to leadership, officership, and the Army profession.

The focus is on developing basic knowledge and comprehension of Army leadership dimensions while gaining a big picture understanding of the ROTC program, its purpose in the Army, and its advantages for the student.

  1. Understand leadership philosophies and integrate them into your own personal development experiences.
  2. Describe the relationship between leader character and competence.
  3. Identify the sixteen dimensions of the Army Leadership Model.
  4. Explain the Warrior Ethos.
  5. Analyze the seven Army values.
  6. Define and achieve standards for the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT).
  7. Write short-term and long-term goals and a personal plan to prepare for APFT.
  8. Recognize the basic elements of time and stress management.
  9. Explain the importance of being a model citizen as an Army officer.
  10. React to passing colors, National music, and approaching officers.
  11. Locate a point on a military map using the grid reference system.
